View looking west at a secret passage that led to a small shrine near the sacred spring.
Some believe the possibly priest would secretly enter this passage way and then would mysteriously deliver divine oracles in the shrine—in a way that would make it appear that the deity was speaking!
Another possibility is that the priests would sneak in and eat the food that was offered to the deity—in such a way that the worshippers would believe that the deity had actually eaten the food!! See for example the story of Daniel in the Apocryphal book “Bel and the Dragon” (vv. 1–22) where Daniel sprinkled ashes on the floor of the temple and caught the priest who were doing this—this story however is from a Babylonian/Persian setting.
