View looking from outside the city towards its main entrance—the Lions’ Gate. On both sides of the image are the massive defensive walls that tower over the entrance path. These are called “Cyclopean Walls” for it was thought that they were built by the giants, the Cyclopes.
On the left are the stones of the citadel wall and on the right are the stones of a stubby projecting bastion.
The Lions’ Gate was built in the thirteenth century B.C. Note solid massive monolithic stone door jams and slightly arched lintel. The gate is about 10.5 ft. [3.2 m.] high and 10 ft. [3 m.] wide.
