View looking down into the "orchestra" of the Roman Theater at Beth Shan (Scythopolis). On the far side of the theater note the scane frons that was originally 60 feet high! Beyond it, note the green eucalyptus trees. This photo was taken in the 1970's—prior to the extensive excavation of the lower city! Compare this photo AFTER the excavation of the lower city and a partially rebuilt scane frons.

The theater was built in the second century A.D. upon an earlier first century theater. It seated 7,000 persons.
