A close-up view of the entrance to the gate when it was discovered. Note the three levels of mud brick that form an arch — let your eye begin in the lower right corner and scan in a counter clockwise direction. The ancient filling is still intact under the arch the doorway. Later this filling was partially cleared by Biran. Also note, that the left side of the gate was not excavated—leaving something for future generations.
Please also note the ORIGINAL white plaster that is still adhering to the mud brick in spots. Evidently, the whole gate complex was originally covered with plaster — that help protect it from disintegration from moisture.
