Detailed view of the raised chancel. Note the two steps that lead up to the sacred area and the small marble fragment of the chancel screen. The altar in the apse is where the elements of the Eucharist were blessed.
On the left (north) side of the image note the round raised area in the nave of the church. These stones supported a raised wooden platform called the ambo—from which a homily (sermon) was delivered.
