View looking south at the foundations of Hadrian's Arch. Only the four foundation piers still exist—in the center of the image, this side of the twin towers of the Hellenistic Gate.
The four piers supported three monumental arches and images of deities and members of the Roman Rulers were displayed in niches in the superstructure. The gate was constructed by Plancia Magna—the benefactress of Perga in the early second century A.D. She was also a priestess of the goddess Artemis. It was constructed to honor the Roman Emperor Hadrian (r. A.D. 117-138).
