View looking north at the partially reconstructed remains of the Temple of Leto at Letoön. This is a view looking in and just in front is the base of one of the two that supported the two columns at its entrance. On both sides of the picture are the protruding walls called antae in Greek.
The doorway leads into the inner chamber and the tops of three columns were on the "back" (north) side of the temple.
This is the shrine that was dedicated to the goddess Leto who gave birth to Apollo and Artemis. The two were conceived by Zeus and were born on the Island of Delos. Because of the jealousy of Hera, the wife of Zeus, Leto fled to this spot to wash her children in the spring—the water table is very close to the surface here!
