View from the Church of the Beatitudes looking southwest over the Plain of Gennesaret. The northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee is on the left side of the image.
In the lower center portion is the very fertile Plain of Gennesaret. Josephus, the first century Jewish historian, writes of its extraordinary climate and produce, including such crops as walnuts, palm trees, figs, olives and grapes (War 3.10.8 [3.516–21]).
The "V" in the line of hills in the center of the image are the Arbel Cliffs, and beyond them the "Horns of Hittim" that are situated in Lower Galilee. The road to Nazareth, Sepphoris, and Ptolemais ran past these land marks.
The Church from which this picture was taken preserves the memory of Jesus’ "Sermon on the Mount" (Matthew 5–7).
