View looking east at the platform constructed by the Jordanians for viewing the Jordan River.  On the Jordanian side, there are actually baptismal pools, with fresh water, about 200 yards east of the river.  The Jordan River is "flowing" from left (north) to the right (south).

This site commemorates John baptizing in this area (Matt 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22; and John 1:28-34).   John 1:28 in the KJV reads "Betharaba beyond Jordan" while the NIV more correctly reads "Bethany on the other side of the Jordan."
