View looking east at the western slope of Tel Lachish.  The tel is slightly above the horizontal midpoint of the image.  The stone structure on the left (north) side of the image is where Starkey constructed a ramp for his dump.  Below it, to the right, is a cut in the side of the mound where Starkey discovered three superimposed Late Bronze Age (1500–1200 B.C.) Canaanite Temples.

On the right, south, side of the tel the reconstructed Israelite Gate is visible.   Between the gate and the temples, on the top of the mound, the trench that David Ussishkin and Gabriel Barkay excavated is visible.
