View looking west along the deep cut on the western side of Lachish.
Gabriel Barkay was in charge of the excavation of this "trench." This cut through many of the strata (levels/layers) of Lachish to gain a survey of the strata of the mound. Compare how Kenyon, for example, cut a similar "trench" at Jericho to gain an overall view of the strata (levels) in the mound.
