Here boats would wait for favorable winds before beginning their difficult journey clockwise and northeastwards up through the Dardanelles (ancient Hellespont) — through which the current flows in the opposite direction — from northeast to southwest!
At one time Constantine thought of making Alexandria Troas his capital instead of Byzantium (modern Istanbul).
