View looking down the shaft of the Israelite water system at Hazor. The system seems to have been built during the ninth century B.C. — during the reign of Omri or Ahab. This shaft descends 62 ft. [19 m.]. Some of the original stairs are still in place.
This system was constructed so as to descend to the water table — where water collected — so that the residents of the citadel were not dependent upon external water sources during times of siege.
It leads to the entrance of a diagonal underground tunnel — Click Here.
