View looking northwest at the interior (western) portion of the “Golden Gate.” On the right (south) side of the image the southern wall of the gate is visible.
The gate was probably built during the rule f the Moslem Caliph, Abd al-Malik, and Umayyad ruler (A.D. 685 to 705). He probably used Byzantine (Christian) architects and craftsmen to build it.
