During the rebuilding of the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem in the 1970s Nahum Avigad was entrusted with the archaeological work conducted there.

One of the most important discoveries of Avigad was a wall that was over 650 ft. [200 m.] long and 23 ft. [7 m.] wide and 10 ft. [3 m.] high wall that dated to the eighth century BC.  This discovery was proof positive that the city had expanded to include a large portion of the western hill of Jerusalem during the eighth century.
