Detailed view of the apse—chancel area—of the North Church.
In the foreground are the stones that separate the chancel from the nave—where the marble chancel screen once stood.
In the apse, note the low bench were the clergy could sit—the synthronos. The stack of stones in the center of the image is where the altar stood and behind it there are stones that are remnants of the platform for the bishop's seat.
Originally, all the limestone walls were covered with a marble veneer.
