View of the central mosaic in the triclinium of a Villa. It is known as "The Pegasus Mosaic" and features 162 color tones of natural stone. It dates to the second century AD and "includes the first known depiction of Hesiod receiving his poetic inspiration from the Queen of Muses, Calliope.
The floor of this Villa is the lowest level reached in the archaeology excavations. It is about 12 feet below most of the finds that are visible in the Museum. It was used between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD. The excavation was limited to the triclinium (banquet hall). The central mosaic carries depictions of pagan myths.
The Villa is known as "the G2House," and the central mosaic is called the "Pegasus Mosaic."
