Seleucia Pieria

Seleucia Pieria

Seleucia Pieria was the ancient Mediterranean Sea port of Antioch on the Orontes.  It is located 15 mi. [24 km.] southwest of Antioch.

It is named after a general of Alexander the Great (Seleucus Nicator) and the nearby mountain (Mt. Pieria).  It briefly served as the capital of the Seleucid kingdom, but at the death of Seleucus (281 B.C.) the capital was moved to Antioch on the Orontes.

Paul and Barnabas set sail from here on Paul’s first missionary journey (Acts 13:4).
