Hellenistic City Gate Reconstructed

photo

View from the south looking north. The two reconstructed, circular towers guard the southern entrance to Perga. They were built in the third century B.C. and were standing when Paul, Barnabas, and John Mark visited the city about A.D. 46.

They still stand to a height of almost 40 feet [12 m.]! A Roman-era agora is located to the right (east) of the gate. A 980-foot [300 m.] long street leads north from this gate.
