View looking west at the southern entrance to the Prytaneum. The two columns have been reerected.

The Prytaneum was dedicated to the goddess Hestia (Vesta) and contained the sacred flame of the city – that was never allowed to go out. It was symbolic of the stability of the city. Here influencial guests were received. The Prytaneis were magistrates who were selected from the most important men and women of the city. They were dedicated to govern and maintain the stability of the city.

The Curetes also met here.

Two statues of Artemis were found in the excavation of this building – Click Here to view.
