View from the top of the theater looking south southwest at the landscape. In ancient times (Hellenistic and Roman Periods) this area was actually a port and ships would dock where the trees are at in the center of the image. The winding Meander River has silted up this whole area so that today Miletus is about 6 mi. [10 km.] inland from the Aegean Sea. Miletus was actually situated on a peninsula of land, and this was one of her four ports.
Note in the theater, the orchestra area (lower left), the cavea seating with the cunei, the diazoma or "belt walk way," and the vomitorium or arched exit way (right of center).
