View of a detail of the southern freeze on the Harpy Tomb. By clicking the “download” button you can have a better view of the details of this freeze.
It was originally thought that the freeze depicted “harpies” (snatching monsters in Greek mythology that have a woman’s head and a bird’s body), but now it is believed that the figures are sirens who are carrying off the souls of the deceased to Hades—note especially the winged creatures on the right and left sides of the south freeze.
This monument dates to the fifth century B.C.
The original marble reliefs from this tomb were taken by Charles Fellows and are now housed in the British Museum. These at the site of Xanthos are plaster casts of the originals.
