View of the top of the sacrificial altar. Note two of the four projecting horns, the metal grating, and the wood on it. In this reconstruction, it looks like the animal parts would be placed directly on the wood.
An alternative proposal, would have the metal grating resting on the horns, the wood placed below the grating, and then the animal parts would be placed on top of the grating—actually something like a modern outdoor grill. This would be a much more efficient way of burning the animal parts.
