View of the "first century synagogue" as it was under excavation circa late 2009. Note the basalt benches around the walls of the room. The "stone box" in the center, the basalt column with a remnant of a fresco (in the foreground), and the partial column on the sandbags.
This synagogue was destroyed in A.D. 67. It was excavated by Dina Avshalom-Gorni and Arfan Najar in collaboration with Marcela Zapata.
