View looking south at the excavations near the Circus/Hippodrome in Antioch on the Orontes. Various structures are being found here, that date from the Late Roman Period into the Byzantine Period.
Note the use of sandbags to keep the baulks from collapsing and the reuse of columns in the wall on the right side of the image.
It seems that the Circus/Hippodrome may have been constructed during the reign of the Roman Emperor Trajan (r. A.D. 98–117) and possibly that is the date of some of the structures found here.
